In order to process cheques more efficiently, the Canadian Payments Association (CPA) has developed a new technology based on electronic cheque imaging. This process will allow financial institutions to transmit information via E-mail instead of by regular mail. Starting on September 2, 2008, all cheques issued in Canada will have to meet the new requirements developed to facilitate image-based clearing.
